Starting Friday, January 27, the Spotlight on the Arts gallery at The Woodlands Mall in The Woodlands, Tx is scheduled to include an exhibit of murals created by community organizations under the direction of artist Vickie McMillan.

The new exhibition is scheduled to include local organizations featuring the 2011 Montgomery fires, Children’s Safe Harbor, Montgomery County Youth Services and the Montgomery County Women’s Center.

Spotlight on the Arts is a community project partly funded by The Woodlands Mall and designed in partnership with Because Art Matters!, ARTreach and the Texas Commission on the Arts.

The program reaches out to social service organizations, schools and other not–for-profit organizations in the community with art projects and encourages people to actively engage in the arts.

Brenda Gottlieb, community outreach chairperson, The Woodlands Waterway Arts Council, stated “We are very pleased to have a venue to display the wonderful work created by area groups under the direction of Vickie McMillan. The Woodlands Mall offers us an opportunity to reach individuals who might not be familiar with BAM! or the area organizations. We appreciate the shopping center’s support. And, we also recognize other art groups, such as the Conroe Art League, for its contributions.”

The skyline near Town Center in The Woodlands, Tx is scheduled to change with a new addition within the next couple of years.

Anadarko, owner of the tallest building between Houston and Dallas, is starting preliminary surveying and work for its next office tower near the current tower off Lake Robbins, acccording to a company spokesperson.

John Christiansen, an Anadarko spokesman, stated “We looked at our expectations for growth and decided we’re going to need more space for the influx of employees we’ll have in the next few years."

The company isn’t saying how tall the building is, but reports have sttated it could be one floor taller than the current tower.

The new building is scheduled to “not have as much floor space,” though, Christiansen stated.

The first tower is 30 floors and stands an estimated 439 feet tall.

The building is anticipating to be finished and ready for a move-in sometime early in 2014, he added, and is scheduled to be located off Woodloch Forest Drive and Lake Robbins Drive, west of the first tower.

While plans haven’t been finalized, the building is set to only house Anadarko employees and not have office space leased to other businesses, Christiansen stated.

Anadarko is scheduled to make a more official announcement within the next couple of weeks, he added, with more specific details on the size of the building.

Renovations at the South Regional Library in The Woodlands, Tx is scheduled to help open up space and improve the traffic flow of the busiest library branch in Montgomery County.

An estimated $63,000 is being used from the South Montgomery County Friends of the Library funds to enlarge the SMCFOL gift shop, rearrange the counter where patrons check out their books and the circulation work area for librarians to have additional space, according to SMCFOL President Gail Magill.

Sarah Booth, assistant director for the county’s library system, stated “The south regional library has been the busiest branch in the system and we definitely need more room. This will allow us to maximize the space we have."

The library posted over 24,000 transactions for full-time staff member in the 2009-2010 fiscal year compared to 23,000 for the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Library, about 17,000 in Magnolia and 15,000 in Conroe, Tx.

With allocated funding for new material as low as it was 14 years due to budget cuts, Booth stated that the library system is becoming more reliant on groups like SMCFOL.

Booth added, “There are no words to describe how valuable they are. The Friends of the Library groups are so supportive … We would not be able to do these renovations without their foresight and dedication.”

Booth stated that the libraries “don’t work around it, we work with it,” by providing Overdrive, an online program which allows users to download free library and audio books to their electronic readers.
